Equipment
Malfunction's instrumentation consists of two guitars and two voices with the odd bit of mandolin thrown in. We use a Peavey P.A. system with 4 mikes and a variety of foot pedals for the guitars.
John on stage plays a Martin J40M Acoustic with a Fishman active pickup through a Hartke Acoustic Attack Pre-amp, Boss Tuner, Boss Chorus and Marshall Reverb pedal with a Morley Volume pedal. He also plays a Sigma mandolin on occassions with a Fishman mandolin bridge pickup fitted. He also keeps a Stanford PSRD20 Round Shouldered Dreadnaught as a stage backup.
Chris plays his old trusty Aria Acoustic from around the mid 70s fitted with a new Duncan Turner Wave-Length pickup into a Yamaha Chorus pedal. He is also in charge of the reverb switch!
Both guitars are also miked up on stage.
The P.A. is a Peavey XR600C mixer amp of 300 watt power with 6 inputs. Speakers are Peavey Hi-Sys 1s (and very heavy!) with 2 Audio Technica AT41 vocal mikes and 2 Shure 545 guitar mikes. A little baby Boss monitor finishes it off. We also have a couple of stage lights when needed.
John has, in the cupboard at home, a Guild D35 acoustic (1976), a Stanford OM5 Acoustic and a rather nice new Eastman mandolin which he can't figure out a way of amplifying properly yet! He also has an Epiphone Les Paul Custom and an American Fender Telecaster Standard which he plays through a Vox 30 watt amp or a Carlsbro TC60 combo which Chris has banned from any Malfunction gigs but he gets a chance to use in his other band - The Cardinal Sinners!!
Many thanks go to Graham, Kelvin and David at City Music in Birmingham who have supplied us with the gear over the years and who still look after it for us!
